If a family is going to hire an interventionist it’s important to hire someone that’s licensed and to check their references.
When it’s urgent that someone get care immediately, La Paloma can make referrals to professional interventionists not just in Memphis, but in other areas of the country as well.
Types of Intervention
Despite what is seen on TV where the person in question is ambushed, interventions can come in many different forms. Some include family and loved ones and others are invitational in nature. Many take the form of a simple interview to gather information.
La Paloma’s treatment programs use a mode of therapy called motivational interviewing as part of our treatment model. We meet an addicted individual where they are and start moving them through the process. Ambush interventions aren’t really consistent with our philosophy. Rather, we are often called in to do an assessment. In this case, the person in question comes in willingly, often with family members, and we talk through the issues they are currently experiencing and why their loved ones are concerned. Something that simple can constitute an intervention, often yielding even greater results than the “surprise” format.
More active interventions take place when there is a denial of addiction. In these cases, we have to help the family help their loved one to identify the issue. The best and most skilled interventionist can quickly ally with the addicted individual and communicate that this process isn’t about hurt, it’s about helping. The professional can remind them that their loved ones are nervous, too, but they are there because they care about the individual and are concerned about what they think is a problem in that person’s life.
